Privacy
Your data
This page says what 50% Film keeps if you create an account, why, and how to take it back. You can read the magazine and watch the films without an account. Nothing here is sold, and we do not run ads.
Who we are
50% Film is the controller for account data. Write to 50percentfilm@gmail.com if you want a copy, a correction, or a deletion you cannot do yourself.
What we collect
Only if you sign in:
- Your email address, from Google, from a one-time link, or from an email and password you choose. The password is stored by our sign-in provider as a hash. We never see it.
- Films you save to your watchlist.
- Star ratings you give those films, from 1 to 5.
- Reviews and interviews that count as read once you reach the end of the page.
- Pieces you bookmark with Save.
- Whether you asked for occasional emails about new films and big pieces. That box starts unticked.
- A profile photo, if you choose one. The browser turns it into a black-and-white square before it is saved. If you do not upload one and you signed in with Google, the circle can show the picture Google already has, also in black and white, and we do not store a separate copy of that picture.
- A public profile, only if you turn it on. That page can show your username, display name, bio, Letterboxd username, four films you pick, the ratings you have given, a few badges worked out from those, and the black-and-white photo under your username. Your email, watchlist, saved pieces, reading history and alerts are not on it.
- A Letterboxd username, if you add one. We read that account’s public diary feed to show four posters. We never ask for a Letterboxd password.
- Films you ask to be told about, using the bell on a film that is not streaming yet. The email switches for those alerts are saved. Release email is not sent yet.
You can sign in with Google, a one-time email link, or a password of at least 8 characters. We do not collect a date of birth. Browsing the site while signed out does not create an account.
Why
We keep the watchlist, ratings and reading history because you asked for an account that remembers them. That is the service. Optional update emails are sent only if you tick the box. You can turn that off in Your 50%.
The average rating on a film page is a total. It does not show who rated what.
Where it is stored
The website is hosted on Netlify. Account data, including a profile photo if you upload one, is stored with Supabase, in the project region chosen for 50% Film (Ireland, eu-west-1). We do not copy it into a separate mailing list or advertising tool.
How long
We keep it while your account exists. Delete the account and we delete your login, watchlist, ratings, reading history, public profile and profile photo. A short-lived backup that Supabase keeps so the database can be restored after a fault may still contain it for a little while. We will not use a backup to put a deleted account back.
Cookies and sign-in storage
We do not set advertising or analytics cookies. Signing in stores a session in this browser so you stay signed in. That storage is only for the account. You can sign out, or clear the site’s data in your browser.
Your rights
You can ask to see your data, correct it, delete it, limit how it is used, or take a copy. Download my data, on Your 50%, gives you a file of the watchlist, ratings, reading history and profile. Delete my account removes the account and the profile photo. For anything else, email 50percentfilm@gmail.com. We will answer within one month.
You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
Children
The account is not for children. If you think a child has signed in, email us and we will delete it.
